The Methods of Translating and Disseminating Epidemiology Into Public Health

The American College of Epidemiology invites nominations for its Special Award for the Translation of Disaster Epidemiology Into Public Health.
Disaster Epidemiology is defined as the use of epidemiology to assess the short- and long-term adverse health effects of disasters and to predict consequences of future disasters. It brings together various topic areas of epidemiology including acute and communicable disease, environmental health, occupational health, chronic disease, injury, mental health, and behavioral health. The main objectives of disaster epidemiology are to: 1) prevent or reduce the number of deaths, illnesses, and injuries caused by disasters; 2) provide timely and accurate health information for decision-makers; and 3) improve prevention and mitigation strategies for future disasters by collecting information for future response preparation.
This special award recognizes an individual who has worked at the intersection of epidemiology and policy by advancing evidence-based public health interventions targeting disaster preparedness, disaster recovery, or other aspects of disaster science. Individuals nominated for this award should show sustained evidence of providing outstanding contributions to the field of disaster epidemiology and have worked toward developing, testing, applying, and evaluating its main objectives. Demonstration of the transformation of theory into practice and how this has led to public health or policy changes is encouraged. Self-nominations are not accepted.
The Award includes an honorarium of $3,000. In addition, the cost of attending the Annual Meeting (transportation and accommodation) will be reimbursed, and registration expenses will be waived.
Nomination Procedure
Active ACE members (Associate, Member, Fellow, Honorary Fellow or Emeritus) are invited to nominate eligible candidates for this award. Nominations should include:
- A letter highlighting the achievements and/or contributions of the nominee pertinent to the award.
- A current curriculum vitae for the nominee.
- The nominator may include up to two supporting letters.
