Translational Environmental Health Research: The Seychelles Child Development Study as an Example

For over 30 years the Seychelles Child Development Study has investigated whether methylmercury exposure from fish consumption influences child neurodevelopment and health. This presentation will give a brief history of the study and its findings, and demonstrate how it has incorporated science across the translational spectrum and has influenced dietary recommendations.

Dr. Edwin van Wijngaarden, PhD, FACE

Edwin van Wijngaarden received an MSc in Environmental Sciences from Wageningen University in The Netherlands, and a PhD in Epidemiology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology. He is Professor and Associate Chair of Public Health Sciences at University of Rochester. He also holds appointments in Environmental Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry, and Community Health & Prevention. Dr. van Wijngaarden is Principle Investigator the Seychelles Child Development Study which for over 30 years has investigated the impact of pre- and postnatal methylmercury exposure on child development. As Associate Chair he oversees the administration of various certificate, master's and doctoral programs in the Department of Public Health Sciences. He is also Strategic Director of Research Education in the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and directs the PhD program in Translational Biomedical Science. He also directs undergraduate majors in Epidemiology, Environmental Health, and Clinical and Translational Sciences. Dr. van Wijngaarden is Editor-in-Chief of the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health. As an ACE member, he has served on the publications, membership, and mentorship committees.
